What is it Really Like to be an Event Planner?

Events hold an important place in our society.  Major milestones in our lives are often marked by a related social event, such as a wedding, anniversary, or birthday party.  Meetings are crucial for making the business world go around.  Business networking events and training seminars can shape our careers.  Charity fundraisers can make a difference in the community.  Tradeshows provide opportunity for networking.  All events are important in their own way.

Anyone who has ever organized or coordinated an event shares a common experience.  This means waking suddenly in the middle of the night and running through a million details about an upcoming event.  Worrying endlessly that you might forget something important.  Having a mini heart attack  when things happen unexpectedly that put your entire event into jeopardy.

This is the life of an event planner, working behind the scenes, dealing with countless “emergencies” and pulling it all together at the last minute.  You are in charge of planning, scheming, artfully fixing, implementing, and coordinating the details.  It is both exciting and chaotic, and there is a lot of pressure to make it all work.  Many people are counting on you to create a flawless event.  Whether it’s a wedding, dinner party, trade show, charity ball, or board meeting, it is up to you to make it happen.

It definitely can be a lot of stress.  But there is also the creative opportunity when you get to use your design skills, the triumphant moment when you've solved a major problem on-site, and the feeling of fulfillment when your client says a sincere "thank you" at the end.  Feel good about event planning, because they can't do it without you!
